The International Journal of Instructional Cases (IJIC) is pleased to announce the launch of its 2019 Business Ethics Case Writing Competition.
Goal of the competition: We share a strong commitment to advancing good business ethics curricula for both undergraduate and graduate programs. To that end, this competition aims to generate teachable concise cases with expanded teaching notes related to addressing the ethical challenges presented to businesses and organizations internationally for use in the classroom and the boardroom.
Theme: Business Ethics— Challenges and Conundrums
Regardless of our role in an organization or business, we are often confronted by conundrums that challenge our moral compass, our ability to apply ethical standards, and our actions on the ground. Our goal is to develop and share materials that can help our students learn how to handle the ethical issues that grow from today’s experiences and trials through providing guidance and practice in ethical analysis.
Your case submission may focus on any specific ethical theme, as long as your case is four pages or fewer, following the submission guidelines at http://www.ijicases.com/submit-a-case/submission-guidelines/ . Cases may be submitted in English, Spanish, or French and will be reviewed in English.
Potential Topic Areas:
Cases may be focused specifically on any area that relates to business or organizational ethics on a wide variety of levels: individual, teams, SMEs through multinationals, even nations or regions. Challenges may come in the disciplines of marketing, management, human behavior, economics, finance/accounting, logistics, and others.
Prize: The winning case will receive an award of US $250 and fast track review for publication in IJIC. The prize will be awarded in December 2019.

Who May Apply:
Submission of cases and TNs are invited from academics, practitioners, or academic/practitioner teams.
How to Apply:
Concise cases and teaching notes may be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 1 August 2019.
Case Submission Criteria: All submissions must:
• Contain no identifying information about authors or their affiliated organization or university within the text.
• Must include a Title Page.
• Be previously unpublished
• Be true and factual. The company may be disguised and the characters may have their names changed for confidentiality, but all situations must be accurate. Disguises must be disclosed on page 1 in a footnote. Fictionalized cases will be disqualified.
• Be submitted in .doc or .docx format in 12 pt Times Roman font, single spaced with 1” margins. No .pdf files will be reviewed.
• Be written in the past tense throughout (except in direct quotation)
• Be no longer than 4 pages (2,000 words), excluding exhibits and Teaching Note
• Include either a decision focus or an analytical focus
• Cases may be based either on secondary sources (publicly available data and documentation, including news articles, court materials, YouTube videos, and others) or on primary (field) research. If based on primary research, include a release from the company or organization (sample provided on request). If based on secondary research, no release is needed.
• Incorporate the following components (the sections should not be subtitled with these generic headings):
o An opening hook that generates interest and foreshadows the key problem
o Company/organization story or history
o Industry background as relevant
o Key characters should be fully developed
o Complete description of the situation or problem
o Exhibits or appendices and references as relevant
• Include a Teaching Note
Teaching Note Submission Criteria: All TNs must include the following elements:
• Abstract (75 word maximum)
• Target audience and usage
• Learning objectives (not teaching objectives)
• Thought questions that relate to the learning objectives
• Short theory review – identify relevant theories without extensive discussion
• Pedagogy – minimum three per http://www.ijicases.com/submit-a-case/submission-guidelines/
• 5-minute self-test for students
• Editable PPT presentation (template at http://www.ijicases.com/submit-a-case/power-point-template/ )
• References and exhibits, as relevant
Concise cases and Teaching Notes will be judged by an international team of expert case referees, selected for their demonstrated skill in case writing and evaluation, as well as their interest in and familiarity with business ethics. As this is a double blind review process, judges’ names will not be publicized.
Submissions will be evaluated as follows:
• Stage 1: Cases and TNs will be checked for adherence to all submission criteria and inclusion of required forms, signatures, and releases.
• Stage 2: Referees will evaluate cases based on the following weighted criteria:
o Case: 50% of the score

|10||Adherence to case conventions, as described in the FAQ|
|15||Potential usefulness in the classroom (engaging and readable)|
|10||Quality of writing and writing style|
o TN: 50% of the score

• Stage 3: Finalist cases will be ranked based on the preceding bulleted items and narrative commentary provided by the jury.
