New concise case explores stakeholder engagement in Canadian civic society

"Aldous Sperl took a break from his Twitter feed. A lot had changed since the night before, when his boss had won the recent election for the riding of Saanich North and the Islands, located in the southern tip of Vancouver Island, on the west coast of British Columbia (BC), Canada’s westernmost province. In the blink of an eye, Aldous had gone from serving as campaign manager in a hard-fought election, to Chief of Staff for the newly elected Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the riding. This had been the breakthrough election for his party (the BC Green Party), which had won a seat in the riding and formal party status for the first time in the province’s history. While the campaign team was still celebrating, Aldous had come into the office early, eager to start on the work to be done to transform what had so recently been a busy, partisan campaign office into the local constituency office".

We are very excited to welcome two new IJIC authors, both based at Royal Roads University, Victoria BC, Canada. Dr. Virginia McKendry, PhD and Barbra Collombin, MA have prepared an engaging and accessible concise case, accompanied by an extensive teaching note and a range of ancilliary materials. The case itself is concerned with issues of civic engagement and participatory, following the story of Aldous Sperl, Chief of Staff for a newly-elected party, who is tasked with putting together a communication strategy that will bring all stakeholders 'into the circle'.

The case can be used to engage students in creating a simple salience-based stakeholder analysis, discussing how to differentiate between stakeholders and non-stakeholders, and understanding how to generate key messages and tactics for engaging a diverse range of stakeholders.

This case is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate-level courses dealing with any of the following topics: organizational communication, strategic communication management, public relations, public engagement, community development, stakeholder research, marketing, social marketing, government relations, business and society, and leadership studies.
